Soul Circus - A Win, A Defeat

Last Summer, myself & the Soul Circus boys spent a while holed up perfecting what was to evenutally be their ‘A Win, A Defeat’ EP.

Eventually, as the band has unfortunately split up since we recorded it, and the tracks only saw the light of day a couple of months ago.

Which is all a shame, as I think the tracks are ace & I’m very proud of the job I did on ‘em

This Christmas

…or last Christmas to be precise. Following on from my Honour Before Glory cover of A Spaceman Came Travelling last year, I was involved in two Christmas tracks as part of Anthologies & Hide & Seek’s charity album This Christmas

I teamed up with Sam Airey for another Honour Before Glory track, this time a cover of (Simply Having A) Wonderful Christmastime. All programmed, produced & mixed by myself. It should also prompt me to write another post on new things I’m using this at it features numerous iOS instruments for super fun times.

Secondly, I produced Stalking Horse’s Beach Boys’ cover Morning Christmas, then mixed by their regular collaborator James Kenosha.

These tracks and many others on the album were made at the studios at Leeds Metropolitan University as we collaborated on the project. You can download the album for a charitable donation at http://justgiving.com/anthologieschristmas2012

This is a co-production I did back in 2008 with my mate and all round brilliant producer Whiskas. At the time Whiskas was looking into getting into production and we were wanted to do something together and was managing The ABC Club at the time. They were new to the studio, but Whiskas wasn’t and the time and detail he spent on guitar tone was amazing to watch and his handy work is really evident here. I learnt loads from him about working with guitarists, probably more than he did from me about working in the studio as he had recorded two albums with some great producers.

But he was generous and gave me loads to space to work and put in my ideas and thoughts. The band were a quiet bunch, quite intense, but really good and I love this song still. The band have subsequently split up, but this record still stands up. It was chosen in Steve Lamaq’s top 60 of the year, which was a real thrill for me.

I hope I’ll get to work with Whiskas again in the future, I’m sure he’ll teach me even more!

Kleine Schweine - The Party

Over the Summer I produced the debut full length from Leeds punk upstarts Kleine Schweine, having previously worked on 2 singles that would appear alongside 8 new tracks.

The album was fund by a Pledge Music campaign, which led to much jollity in the studio, including an afternoon of guest backing singing, featuring the immitable Tom Robinson that deviated into a fully fledged singalong

The album was released on Monday 5th November through my own Listen To The Silence imprint that previously released the Honour Before Glory album

I’m due a whole set of updates, and hopefully this is the start of a comprehensive round-up of what I’ve been up to.

At the start of Summer I moved house and coinciding with a couple of bigger jobs upgraded my mix set-up - both in terms of what I’m using and where I’m using it. The big shift is mixing of my laptop which is more powerful than the old G5 installed at House Of Mook.

I changed over from Universal Audio plug-ins to Waves, got a few me toys like Soundtoys’ Decapitator and DMGEquality, but the main advantage is now the ability to mix on the go, and move studios, something I’m already finding quite liberating I’ll be updating the studio gear list shortly but maybe best not to hold your breath.

The photo above is v1.0 of a version of my new, relatively travel friendly mix set-up, which I’ve dubbed 35BPC. A lot more work on it is to follow.

Unfortunately I haven’t kept this blog upto date, which I’d apologise for, but I think the biggest impact it has is on myself!

The reason I’ve been busy all good - house move, some good production work and lots of busy work with the day job at Leeds Metropolitan University. One of the things I have been busy with over the Summer is building their new web presence

In good time I have lots of things to expand on, but for now a summary of what’s kept me busy:

*moving house, and new & improved mix set-up at 35BPC

*new EP from Soul Circus members’ new project

*new B-Side for Sam Airey (as well as various live shows)

*Kleine Schweine’s debut album The Party

*various tracks for Dirty Green Vinyl

and I’m currently working on some festive tracks for something very special indeed.

Soul Circus - Burn The Map

Sam Airey - A Marker and A Map

A Marker and A Map is the third release I’ve done with Sam Airey, but was recorded at the same time as ‘The Blackout’ single from last year. This EP features four tracks veering from stripped down acoustic, to a more filled out sound, as on lead track ‘The Unlocking’ below - where I also feature on electric guitar

The Unlocking has already been featured heavily on Radio 1, courtesy of Huw Stephens, and there are a couple of launch parties lined up for the coming weeks - where I’ll be repeating my twirly guitar tricks live

Maison EP & Skins

I’ve talked a lot on here about Honour Before Glory - my solo project based almost entirely in the studio

A few weeks ago I released The Maison EP - featuring 4 tracks showing different strands of the same song / idea. I think it gives a good demonstration of the different ways I approach recording, and also the variable nature of this project

Last week, another Honour Before Glory track, Monochrome In Sunshine, was featured in the latest series of Skins. Maison had also previously been featured in Hollyoaks at the end of last year.

Born With Stripes - '...Laces'

Back in January I had the absolute pleasure of working on a couple of tracks at House Of Mook with Born With Stripes - definitely one of the most exciting things I’ve had the fortune to work on (apologies for the superlative)

Kleine Schweine II

First off, an apology - the reason this blog hasn’t been updated much recently is not because I haven’t been busy, but because I have been very busy. As well as recording, I am not lecturing at Leeds Met University and combined with the planning of the forthcoming Live At Leeds The Unconference, a few things have slipped. But no more!

At the start of the year, Kleine Schweine teamed up with me again for the second assault of dictatorially influenced punk rock. This time recorded at Mook, ‘You Can Call Me Albania / Back In The DDR’ were again mastered at Hippocratic, and released almost immediately on free download

The last single, ‘Breakfast In Albania’ also chalked up a couple of radio plays on Tom Robinson’s BBC Introducing show on 6 Music in January. More recording is planned soon

Over the last 6 months I have been intensely working on a series of EPs that most likely won’t see the light of day for a not dissimilar length of time (Shark Teeth/Blood Oranges, Sam Airey, Monte Carlo, Honour Before Glory & Harry George Johns)

It’s been refreshing therefore to in the last week work on two singles that will be out almost immediately.
